Customer Reviews:
2 out of 5 stars Works most of the time, but consumes 21 kwh/year even in off state   July 18, 2010

The smarthome switchlinc (V2) devices consume 3-5 watts continuously (about 35 kwh/year) according to their tech support people. I tested one device and found it consumed 2.34 watts (120V @ 78 mA, PF=0.25) or 20.5 kwh per year. There appears to be considerable variability in power consumption between individual switchlinc devices as some were noticeably warmer than others even when in the off mode.

I have had more than a dozen of the switchlinc relay V2 devices installed for the past several years. While they work most of the time, they occasionally get into a "jabber" situation with the data being sent continuously between the devices which renders all of them inoperative until all the devices are power cycled. This problem occurs after small power line transients (recorded with a power line monitoring instrument) which do not affect other electronic equipment.

For comparison, the Leviton 4295 X10 relay device consumes about 0.8 watts (120V @ 28 mA, PF=0.24) continuously (7 kwh/year). That's a lot less than the switchlinc devices, but it could and should be even lower. Interestingly, I found these devices consume the same amount of power whether or not the relay inside is actuated.

INSTEON devices are a more reliable alternative to the older X10 technology. Like X10 signalling is done over power lines but the protocols are improved to better reject noise and improve reliability. See [...]
In addition, INSTEON also supports RF signalling in some devices. Buying via AMAZON is something new and the Free Shipping is a plus.
