Product Description
New emergency fire starter. This magnesium fire starter is easy to use: (1) Gently shave a small quantity of magnesium with metal striker into a small pile of grass, paper or leaves to start a campfire (2) Strike the magnesium rod with striker (3) The sparks will start the fire with the shaved magnesium

3 out of 5 stars Handy and good for the price   July 25, 2010

I bought this along with the Swedish Firesteel to test them out. I like this product due to the fact that you can shave the magnesium off and use it to start the tender, however I found that the flint was difficult to use and did not put off much spark. It did spark, though. The swedish firesteel throws of a much bigger and hotter spark and was much easier to use, however if you do not have good tender it doesn't matter much. I think that having both of them together is good and they are both are a relatively inexpensive purchase if you consider how valuable they are when needed.

1 out of 5 stars Almost Worthless   July 23, 2010

I don't understand all the glowing reviews. The little "saw" you get with this product can't produce anything more than tiny specks of magnesium. I was expecting easily-cut flakes. It's also small and pretty flimsy, and is attached by a tiny chain which means you have to separate the saw from the other piece to use the thing. It took me about fifty strikes to ignite a piece of tissue, and the saw blade cut into my forefinger in the process. There has to be something better out there.

does its job... try it out once when you get it so you know how to use it in the backcountry

4 out of 5 stars Great, but provided hacksaw blade could be better.   June 3, 2010

The magnesium bar itself is great, just take a piece of steel and scrape the side opposite of the striker. If your confused like I was, watch this: [...]. Don't be put off by the fact that he is a kid; he knows what he is talking about, at least as far as this goes.

My only problem with this product is the included Hacksaw blade. You want to use a a straight edge to scrape off the magnesium, however in doing so with the included blade, it is very easy to cut yourself on the serrated edge; at the very least it is extremely uncomfortable. I personally would have preferred a simple piece of metal with a hole in it. I took an old dull kitchen knife, cut off the blade and drilled a hole in it, works great. You could also just carry an old kitchen knife with you.
