5 out of 5 stars Practice makes perfect   July 21, 2010

Excellent replacement for both a weed eater and a golf swing trainer, this tool needs a little practice to get it working its best, then you'll wonder why you didn't get one sooner. Just like your lawnmower's blade won't cut grass if you slowly brush it through, this "whip" needs head speed to cut as it should. When you get it moving fast enough with a good pendulum motion, it'll cut anything a gas trimmer will minus noise and hassle - it's actually pretty fun. My son is a scratch golfer and goes on about how it replaces expensive swing trainers and can get your golf swing in shape as it 'feels just like a 9-iron' and 'develops muscle memory'. Seems that the head came fully painted including the edges and cuts fine without sharpening, but as it gets more use the sharp edges slowly emerge. Would buy again.

5 out of 5 stars Golf swing weeding!   June 5, 2010

My golf game isn't going anywhere, but this is a great lightweight cutter that works like a charm. Just swing it like a golf club and you'll cut the weeds in no time! Product came quickly and was exactly as described. I use it in areas where I can't get a mower.

As a kid I used a grass whip on my parent's property. It was great! This whip is made in China. Is too short. Did not have blade sharpened; I had to sharpen it. It does the basic work but not like those of my youth. In California they don't sell this type of tool at home improvement stores; only a clunky, heavy facsimile. No good. Was happy that I found it on Amazon. But next time I'll buy the Bully Tools grass whip made in USA (Bully #92399) and have a better tool. I should have researched first.

5 out of 5 stars A tool for every purpose.   July 13, 2009

Am I practicing my golf swing or doing yard work? I'm not a golfer, so I won't profess to know that I would be practicing anything good, but sometimes I feel like I am.

I came by the concept of a weed whip by my Dad, who had finally(I thought) given up trying to get me to use a gas powered mower. He remembered using a weed or grass whip as a kid, and low and behold, they are still made. It is inexpensive, lightweight, and with a little practice, works both quickly and easily. My reel mower cuts grass wonderfully, but those little seed stalks just bend over and laugh at it as I go over. What was taking me hours to do with scissors (living situations mandate certain things about my yard and if it isn't short enough they mow it for me- otherwise, I'm really not that crazy) takes maybe 15 minutes to do with my Seymour Grass Whip.

I would recommend this for anyone that wants an easy, pollution free, and low maintenance way to get rid of the weeds and seed stalks that your mower won't cut. Just line up, swing, and let it fall back the other way like a pendulum- move forward or to the next weed, repeat. With a little practice it is fairly simple to get them about even with your grass.

4 out of 5 stars I sharpened mine   September 16, 2008

Got mine today and I sharpened it as soon as I took it out of the box. I used a 3/16ths inch diamond encrusted wheel on a Dremel tool and honed all the edges nicely. When I was done cutting weeds, I rinsed it off and gave it a coat of Boeshield to keep the bare metal from rusting up.

I found the length to be fine and I am 6' 4" tall. It's a bit tricky trying to cut around buildings or near other obstructions or stones, etc. but I managed to get most of it and what remains can be pulled. I might put down a little gravel on such areas?

I cut through some areas where there were thick tall stands of weeds with some difficulty. I don't think it would have been possible at all, if I hadn't sharpened it. It comes dull with a thick coat of blue paint over all the edges.

This tool is the perfect companion for my manual reel mower, which I bought at a yard sale for $15. After disabling the clutch by inserting a longer metal rod, sharpening it and adjusting the bar that meets the blades, I absolutely love it.
